1.) Writer

Admittedly, writing isn’t an easy career field to get into, especially if you want to reach the ranks of the greats.

However, writing is more than just publishing books. With modern technology, many have developed freelance writing careers. And even this career path has multiple options, from blogging to marketing to journalism.

The beauty of a career in writing is it allows you to work from whatever you want. And, as long as you’re good enough, under any intoxication. Therefore, it’s no surprise many writers are also stoners.

Some places even offer specialized cannabis writing training. For example, in Colorado, you can take classes dedicated to further developing your writing while under the influence of cannabis.

2.) Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship allows for independence and can be taken in any industry. However, since cannabis continues to be legalized throughout the United States, it may make the most sense to start a business in this industry.

Either way, the most important element of entrepreneurship is you get to make the rules. So, if you don’t want to give yourself (or your employees) a drug test, you don’t have to.

Furthermore, marijuana may just be a tool for your growing business. Many professionals have found its creative properties have helped jumpstart ideas (i.e. marketing campaigns) that have taken their business to the next level.

3.) Real Estate Agent

Since the majority of real estate agents are independent contractors, they don’t need to drug test. Even still, agencies that do hire real estate agents rarely drug test.

Of course, this may not be a career you want to be “high” on the job for. Selling property requires a pizzazz and if you find marijuana inhibits your social abilities, you may want to save that toke for when you clock out.

The only real difficulty you may run into is getting your real estate license. Some states will drug test during the licensing process – so, be sure to do a bit of research before diving into this career.

4.) Fashion Industry

There are two reasons cannabis smokers love the fashion industry.

  1. Drug testing isn’t popular (which may be why the industry has a reputation for cocaine).
  2. To make it in this industry, you need creativity. And marijuana may promote that.

Currently, the fashion industry and marijuana seem to go hand-in-hand. “Weed-themed” clothing has become all-the-rage, with cultural icons such as Rihanna and Alexander Wang representing.

5.) Musician

While it’s not an easy career to jump into, marijuana and musicians are a match made in heaven. From the creativity involved to the sporadic nightlife, it comes as no surprise so many musicians consume marijuana.

And what we find most interesting is how this plant spans many genres, from hip-hop (Snoop Dogg) to country (Willie Nelson).

Still, it’s no secret that becoming a famous musician is far from attainable for most. Luckily, plenty of cities have local scenes where musicians are paid well enough to get by. You may not be selling out stadiums, but you’ll get to do what you love without worrying about being drug tested.

6.) Computer Programmer or Web Developer

When you think of a cannabis-friendly career, a job in tech might be the last thing that comes to your mind. However, web developers and computer programmers are often free to live a lifestyle of their choice.

Why? The majority own their own web design company or work as subcontractors. Beyond the fact that these companies don’t drug test, you’ll most likely have the option to work entirely from home (or, at least partly on a hybrid model).

Hell, some web developers enjoy being a little stoned when working. The creative boost can help them create innovative designs that they may not have otherwise considered.

7.) Restaurant Industry

We’ve found most cannabis smokers have worked in a restaurant at some point in their lives. If you have as well, you may have noticed most of your employees also require a toke to get through the high-stress and late nights.

Restaurants hold the opportunity for creativity when done right. If you’re a chef, you can work your way up to developing your own dishes. If you’re a bartender, you can get to a point where you make your own drinks.

In fact, many in the restaurant industry now experiment with cannabis-infused dishes. As legalization continues, we wouldn’t be surprised if you could order a marijuana-infused edible as your dinner plate.

8.) Entertainment Industry

Hollywood and cannabis go hand-in-hand. Whether you’re an actor, director, or writer, this cannabis-friendly career field requires constant creative innovation.

Of course, breaking into the entertainment industry is easier said than done. However, unlike other creative fields, there are a lot of opportunities for other types of work. For example, every film set requires at least fifty people on staff, ranging from production assistants (PAs) to makeup artists to transportation.

You can “break in” without becoming famous. And you can make a decent wage while you work to the top. Oh, and you won’t have to worry about getting drug tested if you want to take a few puffs on your entertainment journey.

9.) Barista

If there’s one drug this country can agree on, it’s caffeine. There’s no shortage of coffee shops opening up alongside barista positions. In most cases, you won’t be drug tested for the job.

Furthermore, this may be an ideal career direction if you need benefits. For example, Starbucks offers healthcare for employees who work 20 hours or more per week. They also offer to help pay for a bachelor’s degree.

Final Word

While some career choices continue to condemn marijuana use and drug tests accordingly, the tides are changing. With legalization and a change in cultural attitudes, more employers are accepting the fact that their employees enjoy cannabis.

Still, nothing is perfect just yet. And until federal legalization becomes a reality, these career choices may be the most optimal if you consume cannabis.
