G Pen Connect Review

Chances are, if you’re reading this, it’s because you’re considering buying a G Pen Connect, or another type of vaporizer for extracts and concentrates that you can run through a bong or dab rig. You’re in the right place – this comprehensive G Pen Connect review will walk you through the pros and cons of the device, and ultimately help you decide if it’s worth your money.

The short answer is: yes. We’ve tested a number of different devices that allow you to vaporize concentrates through a bong or dab rig, and this one is hands-down our favorite. It’s dead easy to use and maintain, and delivers powerful hits despite its small size. All things considered, the G Pen Connect is a solid buy for concentrate smokers or vapers.

What is the G Pen Connect?

The G Pen Connect is a vaporizer for concentrates, oils and extracts, that connects easily to any bong or dab rig for increased filtration. It’s worth noting that the G Pen Connect can only be used with a bong or dab rig, and not on its own. If you’re looking for something ultra-portable that can be used on its own, without a rig or piece of any kind, consider a vape pen or other type of pocket-sized vaporizer. But if you want something to use at home, or even on the go, in conjunction with a water filtration system in the form of a bong or rig, the G Pen Connect is your new best friend.

How Does the G Pen Connect Work?

g-pen-connect-product-image-2

The G Pen Connect is composed of a few simple parts: an atomizer, a carb cap, a battery, a spring-loaded airflow button, and a glass-on-glass connector. The G Pen Connect works by vaporizing the concentrates on a ceramic heating pad located in the atomizer. The vapor is then drawn down through your piece via lung power, just like a normal dab rig. The built-in glass-on-glass connector attaches directly to your rig using the same mechanism as a bowl or banger, ensuring a snug fit.

It’s worth mentioning that the G Pen Connect ships with a standard 14mm connector, so if your rig is a different size, make sure to also order the correct size of adapter. Adapters also come in female configuration.

Pros & Cons of the G Pen Connect

Pros

  • Extremely easy to use
  • Sesh mode for hands-free dabs
  • Three power/heat settings
  • Connects effortlessly to bongs and rigs
  • One-button operation
  • Heats up in 5 seconds
  • Good-sized atomizer accommodates both large and small dabs
  • Spring-loaded airflow button makes it easy to clear - fun to use, too
  • Comes with a sleek carrying case that easily fits all of the parts for on-the-go dabs

Cons

  • A little bit expensive compared to bangers and torches, and even when compared to some other concentrate vapes
  • Shape and material of the ceramic atomizer make it so you can’t swab clean after use with a Q-Tip
  • Only 3 power/heat settings - less control over heat settings than some other vapes
  • Sides of the atomizer don’t heat up enough to melt concentrates - if you’re used to either a traditional banger, or something with a quartz or titanium crucible, you’ll need to adjust your technique when it comes to loading in concentrates

How to Use Your G Pen Connect

Once assembled, using the G Pen Connect is easy. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Affix the G Pen Connect to your bong via the glass-on-glass connector. This is as easy as just placing it into the downstem, just like you’d place a bowl into a bong.
  2. Load concentrates into the atomizer – just place them directly on the ceramic pad at the bottom.
  3. Put on the carb cap. It doesn’t matter which direction the hole is facing.
  4. Attach the battery, if you didn’t already.
  5. Power up the atomizer by pressing the button. These are the different button controls for the G Pen Connect:
    • Press and hold – the G Pen Connect atomizer will heat up continuously as long as you hold down the button, with a max heat time of 15 seconds.
    • Two clicks – this activates “sesh mode.” The atomizer will pre-heat for 5 seconds, then run at full heat for 10 seconds, without needing to hold down the button. This is my preferred way to use the G Pen Connect – it’s easy and hands-free.
    • Three clicks – this changes the power level. Red for highest, Green for middle, and Blue for lowest heat setting.
    • Five clicks – this turns the G Pen Connect battery on or off.
  6. Use the spring-loaded airflow control button to create airflow for clearing the chamber.

With the basics covered, here are some pro-tips for getting the most out of your G Pen Connect experience:

  • Larger dabs may take two or even three full “sesh modes” to vaporize completely.
  • Sometimes the first run of sesh mode on a lower power setting won’t produce much vapor. That’s ok – run it again and you should get much bigger clouds.
  • The highest heat setting produces some incredible vapor, but is hot on the lungs – I’ve found the middle heat setting (green) to be the best mix of vapor production and cool, comfortable dabs.
  • Some people prefer warm or room-temperature water in their dab rigs – and some people even run them dry, with no water at all. The reasoning is that cold water may somehow strip the vapor of cannabinoids or potency. There’s no scientific evidence to support this theory, and cold water produces the smoothest hits in my experience. I always use fresh cold water for every sesh, and don’t see any reason to do otherwise.
  • Try to get your concentrates directly onto the ceramic heating pad, and not on the walls of the atomizer. As we mentioned before, the walls don’t heat up very much, and certainly not enough to melt concentrates. Any material that’s not directly on the heating pad at the bottom may not get vaporized – and might even get stuck there.
  • Make sure the glass-on-glass adapter is firmly connected to your rig. The tiniest leak of airflow can impact your dabbing experience significantly.
  • Smaller rigs with less vigorous diffusing are known to produce better flavor for dabs than super-chuggy large bongs.
  • Stop puffing as soon as the flavor of your dab dissipates – you don’t want to be hitting dry ceramic.

How to Clean and Maintain Your G Pen Connect

The G Pen Connect disassembles for super-easy cleaning. To clean off residual concentrates from the ceramic heating element itself, just run a sesh mode at the highest power – it should burn off any remaining traces of wax. For all of the metal and plastic pieces, it should be sufficient to simply wipe them down with 99% isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel. Clean vapes are the best vapes, so make sure to maintain your G Pen Connect regularly for the best performance.

Should you need them, replacement atomizers and batteries are available. That said, after more than a month of heavy daily use, we’ve found both the atomizer and the battery still perform like new. We’ll update this article when either needs to be replaced, but the build quality seems excellent – we don’t anticipate needing to replace parts any time soon.

How to Charge Your G Pen Connect

Charging the G Pen Connect couldn’t be easier – just plug it into a power source using the included micro-USB cable. Our G Pen Connect came out of the box with about a 30% charge, so it would have been immediately usable – but we always recommend fully charging a brand-new device before use.

G Pen Connect vs. Dab Pens

First things first – the G Pen Connect isn’t a dab pen. I know, I know – it says “pen” right there in the name! The G Pen Connect could be more accurately described as an e-nail, or an electric dab rig adapter. It replaces a banger and torch, rather than replacing a hand-held vape or entire dab rig system. If your goal is to purchase a device that can fit entirely in your pocket for dabs on the go, look for a wax pen or vape. If you want something for taking full-flavored, heavy-hitting dabs, without fussing with torches and Q-Tips, the G Pen Connect is right up your alley. We absolutely love this product – it’s become a daily driver here at the AMMA office – but it’s important to know what you need from a vape before buying one.

G Pen Connect vs. Dab Rigs

The traditional way to take dabs is, of course, with a dab rig. This relatively old-school method involves heating a glass banger (basically a dish or bowl made of quartz or borosilicate, with a solid bottom, which connects to a dab rig via a downstem) with a torch, and then dropping in a dose of concentrates, which vaporize more or less instantly. While using a traditional banger with a torch gives you a lot of control over the heat you dab at, it’s also very finicky – it takes a lot of trial, error, and practice to get it perfect. If you want consistent temperature, you’ll need an infrared thermometer like the OCTAVE Terp Timer.

The G Pen Connect removes all of that guesswork, delivering effortless dabs at the exact same temperature, every single time. Of course, with only three heat settings, you have less precise control over your dabbing temperature. And with such a quick heat-up time, cold start dabs are slightly less effective. That said, we’d gladly trade the fine-tuning of heat settings for the ease of use provided by the G Pen Connect. What’s more – we’re happy to put down the torch for good. While it can be fun to heat up your banger manually using a torch, they are often frustrating to use, take up a ton of counter space, and can even be dangerous.

G Pen Connect vs. E-Rigs

There are a number of all-in-one electric dab rigs on the market these days, like the Kandypens Oura, the Dr. Dabber Switch, and the Puffco Peak. Each of these is a fully self-contained unit, with an atomizer, battery, and water filtration system built right in. These electric dab rigs, or e-rigs, are very simple to use, since they’re a single unit with no external parts. However, they are limiting in their own ways – they can be very expensive, with some costing as much as $400, compared to the G Pen Connect which costs about half of that. You don’t have any choice of the type of rig or diffuser you prefer – since the water filtration is built-in, you must use the one that comes with it. With the G Pen Connect, you can choose any type of bong or rig at all – you’re in 100% control. E-rigs can also be more difficult to clean, since they don’t disassemble as easily as the G Pen Connect. Chances are, you’ve probably already got a bong or rig kicking around – why not put it to use, rather than getting an entirely new setup?

Final Thoughts on the G Pen Connect

The G Pen Connect is hands down the easiest way to run a concentrate vape through a dab rig. It makes taking dabs through a glass or silicone piece as easy as the push of a button. While it won’t replace a good dab pen or vaporizer for pocket-sized dabs, it’s a major step up from using a torch and banger. The vapor production is far superior to most hand-held vapes, and it’s the only vape we’re aware of that can connect to a rig out-of-the-box, with no special equipment or adapters. Having tried a number of e-rigs and e-nails, and even complicated adapters to connect regular vapes to water pipes, the G Pen Connect is, without a doubt, the superior choice.

Made with top-tier materials and the excellent build quality we’ve come to expect from Grenco Science, we can’t say enough good things about the G Pen Connect. Though it lacks one or two advanced features, like by-degree temperature control, we don’t find ourselves missing them – the ease of use and excellent vapor production more than make up for it.
