What is CBD?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is an organic compound found in marijuana and hemp. Unlike its counterpart, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not psychoactive. Being non-psychoactive means that CBD doesn’t give the user a mind ‘high.’ Instead of a mind high, it provides the user with a ‘body high’ which manifests in the form of a relaxed body while the user remains lucid and entirely sober. The best plant for medical marijuana is the one with low THC, high CBD content.

The preferable THC content is below 0.3%, which is also the legally accepted percentage in jurisdictions where THC is illegal.

Uses of CBD

This compound can be used in pets and pretty much all other vertebrates. You are probably wondering, “What is CBD oil for dogs? or even cats? All these questions are valid, but we seek to answer, ‘what is CBD used for in humans?’

The general use of CBD in the body is the restoration of homeostasis. Homeostasis is a balance that allows your body to operate within a specific prescribed range of parameters. It is within these parameters that it is designed to perform optimally.

Homeostasis, therefore, plays a vital role in determining your level of wellness.  When the body is working within the correct range of parameters, it is said to be within homeostatic balance.

Vitals that require such balance include temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, body pH, among others.  If your body finds itself above or below what is healthy, it malfunctions, and it needs to be restored.

The benefits of CBD Oil

CBD Oil is the best known of CBD products, and it has become a powerhouse on all matters wellness. And what is CBD oil good for? Is understandably popular because it asks for specifics other than the rather general “restoration of homeostatic balance.” The following is a list of some of its benefits.

Alleviating pain

People used marijuana for pain relief as far back as 2900 BC. For a long time, the effect of cannabis on pain wasn’t well understood. This lack of understanding made it difficult for users to exploit the full benefits of the cannabinoid.

In 1992, researchers discovered a hitherto unknown organ system.  This organ system is responsible for the regulation of vital function such as sleep, appetite, immune system, inflammation and pain in humans and most other vertebrates. The system is known as the endocannabinoid system.

One part of the endocannabinoid system is the cannabinoid receptors. Receptors combine with CBD to inhibit the body’s ability to transmit pain to the brain. Inhibited transmission of pain signal means less pain.

It is for this reason that the cannabinoid is popular with people who have chronic pain from diseases such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflamed Bowel Syndrome, among others.

CBD is useful in reducing anxiety

Anxiety and depression are the leading causes of disability in the world today. Traditionally depression and anxiety are treated using pharmaceutical drugs which usually have debilitating side effects such as weight gain, drowsiness, and sexual dysfunction, among others.

Besides side effects, pharmaceutical drugs for anxiety and depression often cause the user to develop a dependency. CBD oil, unlike those pharmaceutical drugs, is effective, it has minimal side effects, and it is not addictive.

Epilepsy treatment

Certain types of epilepsy, especially in children, have proved to be resistant to traditional drugs. The two best known are the Dravet Syndrome and the Lennox – Gaustat Syndrome. These two are not only drug-resistant but also terrifyingly severe.

The case that led to the establishment of Charlotte’s Web CBD Company was that of six-year-old Charlotte Figi whose Dravet Syndrome caused her up to fifty seizures every day, and no traditional drug was any help.

Use of pharmaceutical-grade CBD oil led to a significant improvement reducing the seizures to just a handful every month, and this improvement was sustained over the years without any significant side effects.

This same effect has been replicated in other children with drug-resistant epilepsy around the world. Epidiolex, the first CBD based drug in the world, was approved for the management of pediatric epilepsy, and it is a testament to CBD’s effectiveness.

Acne treatment

The skin condition known as acne affects up to 9% of the world’s population. Acne is sometimes genetically instigated, and it is usually chronic. Many of the products touted as treatment are either non-effective or have potentially harmful side effects.

Excessive production of sebum by the Sebaceous Glands is one of the factors to which acne is attributed.  Suppression of the production of sebum is, therefore, the easiest way to reduce acne. Recent research suggests that Sebaceous Glands have the endocannabinoid system in them.

Once you take or apply in the CBD, it connects to the CBD receptors on the Sebaceous Glands and inhibits the production of sebum.

The other reason why CBD helps in the reduction of acne is through its anti-inflammatory action. It prevents the production of agents of acne such as cytokines, and this leaves your skin healthier and better looking.

The healing potential of CBD

In relative terms, CBD is still not well researched and how the human body responds to it is an area that is still at the early stages of exploration. At this point, while anatomy has advanced so far, the nascent understanding of the endocannabinoid system and CBD can be attributed to the fact that marijuana which is one of the primary sources of CBD was illegal for a long time.  Marijuana’s illegal status curtailed research since special permits were needed to enable researchers to access the then tightly controlled substance.

Be that as it may, marijuana has not only proved beneficial in the treatment of acne and seizures, it has also shown real potential in the management of anxiety attacks, through regulation of certain hormones in the brain. Research also indicates that CBD may have the capability to manage psychosis by restoring hormonal balance in the brain.

CBD also has some antiemetic qualities, and it helps in instances of chronic nausea. A critical area of application of CBD’s antiemetic qualities is in people undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

There are many other possible benefits, such as inhibiting the growth of tumors, possible prevention of diabetes, among others. In many of these areas, however, research is still ongoing.

Health risks associated with CBD

There are few serious health risks associated with CBD except in the rare instance that the user is allergic to it. Possible side effects of the supplement include a change in appetite where some people gain, and others lose it, diarrhea, fatigue, drowsiness, and an increase in reaction time.

One crucial point to consider when taking CBD is how it interacts with medicine. As a health supplement, it is well tolerated except in the instance where you are taking medication that has grapefruit warning. Both CBD and grapefruit affect the same enzymes that are responsible for drug metabolism. However, if you are taking any medicine, consult your doctor before taking CBD or let your doctor know before they prescribe.

How Should I Take CBD?

How you take CBD depends on the type of CBD products you are using. Below is a list of products and how you take them. But wait a minute; what are CBD products? Why are they called CBD and not marijuana products? They are called CBD products because CBD is their main ingredient.

CBD Oils

What is CBD oil made from? CBD oils refer to either a full spectrum extract from a low THC – high CBD hemp plant. In reality, such hemp extract contains all the over a hundred phytocannabinoids found in the plant as well as other organic compounds such as terpenes, but the highest percentage content is CBD.

The term CBD oil can also refer to isolates. What is CBD isolate? In an isolate, all other organic compounds found in hemp are filtered out to leave only CBD. Both full-spectrum and CBD isolates come with droppers, many of these droppers are calibrated to release 1ml of oil in every drop.

Making an isolate is more involving than making full-spectrum oil so one might wonder why bother making them? What is CBD isolate used for? It is primarily used to boost the CBD content in your regular full-spectrum CBD oil.

You take the CBD sublingually, by putting drops under the tongue, putting the number of drops that contain the amount of CBD you need to take with every serving.

CBD Edibles

What are CBD edibles? Edibles are snacks and candy that have been infused with CBD. They include chocolate bars, cookies, and gummies etc. Edibles make it is easy to take CBD because you can chew them anywhere. These edibles are usually, pre-dosed and if they come from a reputable manufacturer, you can be sure of the exact number of CBD milligrams you are taking with each cookie or snack.

CBD Topicals

This is where you find an answer to your question, “what is CBD cream?” Topicals are CBD oil-infused salves and creams, which are used for external pain relief, reducing inflammations and swellings. It may also refer to lotions and other skincare products. Many of these products are scented and other than having a calming effect; they leave the user smelling nice.

Topicals can be used for both chronic and everyday pain by rubbing them on the affected areas.  You determine the amount of CBD you use in this case by applying more and more of the cream as and when you need it.

CBD Beverages

If you have been wondering, “what is CBD water?” Here is your answer. CBD beverages refer to drinks infused with CBD. CBD combines well with many different beverages. The type of CBD product to be introduced depends on the kind of beverage in question. Frothy drinks such as beers and sodas mix well with CBD oils, and other beverages such as juices, wines and other non-foamy drinks mix better with tinctures.
